City of Thousand Oaks Certified Green Businesses distinguish themselves from their competition by adopting sustainable business practices and showing that “going green” can be good for the bottom line. These businesses have taken significant steps to reduce their environmental impact by implementing internal programs in the areas of energy conservation, water efficiency, waste reduction, pollution prevention and green purchasing. The City is currently certifying small to medium-sized businesses in the office/retail and restaurant/food service business sectors, with additional sectors to be rolled out later in the year. The Greater Conejo Valley Chamber of Commerce enhances the profitability of businesses in the cities of Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Agoura Hills through leadership, political action and dynamic programs to promote economic vitality for our members and community. To lead by example, the Chamber itself has embraced green practices by installing a water filtering system, using recycled content pens and office supplies, as well as recycled content paper for copiers, business cards, letterhead and kitchen and bathroom paper. Reusable dishware is used at their signature events, including the Annual Awards Gala and State of the City, and they limit paper waste with online billing and event registration.

Conejo Awards has the unique distinction of being the City's very first certified Green Business, and owner Tammie Helmuth has become and ambassador for the Green Business Program. They can attribute over $100,000 in contracts to their Green Business Certification. They often use reclaimed construction materials to make their awards, utilize an advanced air filterin gsystem to remove pollutants from the production process that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere and subscribe to searchable databases instead of mailing catalogs. As a full service solid waste consulting firm, Solid Waste Solutions is no stranger to reducing waste and being green. Owner Kim Nilsson helps clients reduce their environmental impact as part of their normal business activities. They utlize a fuel-efficient Smart Car for local business travel. They purchase recycled content copy paper and recycle their used batteries and electronic waste. to conserve energy, they use natural or task lighting, Energy Star rated computers and printers and small fans instead of air conditioning.

Plaza Cleaners, owned by the Lee Family, became the first garment cleaning business in the City to achieve this certification. Plaza Cleaners is on the cutting edge of their industry, implementing a more environmentally-friendly "wet" cleaning method that eliminates the use of toxic dry cleaning chemicals. They have shown other garment cleaning businesses how wet cleaning garments is just as effective as dry cleaning, with less impact to the environment. They also reuse and recycle garment hangers and hanger covers and provide new customers with a reusable fabric garment bag.
Paperless Solutions provides scanning and record archiving services to businesses. They scan hundreds of boxes of paper in their operations and then shred and recycle all of it. Each month they save the equivalent of 127 trees just through their paper shredding and recycling services. Owner Kim Dilallo has also made a conscious effort to reduce energy use by utilizing natural light, energy efficient T-5 fluorescent lamps, fans and open doors for cooling instead of air conditioning. All scanners and computers are Energy Star rated. They make sure to recycle any batteries, bottles and cans that are generated on site.
